Racial capitalism and Polish migrant workers – new article

We have published a new article on racial capitalism and Polish migrant workers in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies – a leading disciplianary venue. The article extends the scope of theoretical applications of racial capitalism to Eastern Europe. Our work demonstrates how the lives of Polish essential workers, as both Eastern Europeans and migrant workers, are shaped by hierarchies, marginalisation and exclusion in the workplace. While formally classified as ‘essential workers’ necessary to keep society safe and economy going during the pandemic, they simultaneously faced low pay, low status, and job insecurity. We argue that Polish migrant workers are expected to occupy, and remain within, a distinct role in the UK economy as able indestructible bodies and are disciplined for any attempts to move up, across or to challenge their allotted role within this racialised system. The article is fully available online and you can read it HERE.
